چکیده

This paper presents a model for interdomain traffic simulation at the flow level. The model explicitly takes into account three network-related variables for the traffic generation process: the arrival process of the layer-4 flows, the traffic volume carried over these flows and the rate at which these flows can send traffic. The variables of the model are first analyzed on a real flow-level interdomain traffic trace to obtain an accurate picture of the properties they must conform to, and which will allow to generate simulated traffic patterns that have statistical properties close to the ones of a true flowlevel interdomain traffic trace. We validate the simulated flow-level traffic patterns by studying the arising of the self-similarity in the traffic, and comparing our results with already known facts about the packet-level traffic self-similarity. The implications of these simulations on the simulation and modeling of interdomain traffic at the flowlevel are also discussed. Implications of Interdomain Traffic Characteristics on Traffic Engineering

We study the interdomain traffic as seen by a non-transit ISP, based on a six days trace covering all the interdomain links of this ISP. Our analysis considers the relationships between the interdomain traffic and the interdomain topology. We first discuss the day-to-day stability of the interdomain traffic matrix to evaluate the feasibility of interdomain traffic engineering. Then, we study th...

A Model of Interdomain Network Formation, Economics and Routing

The Internet at the interdomain level is highly dynamic, as autonomous networks change their connectivity to optimize either monetary cost, profit and/or performance. Internet Service Providers (ISPs), for example, are mainly concerned with maximizing their profits, and they attempt to do so by changing their set of providers or peers. It is not well understood, however, what the properties of ...

Analysis of Interdomain Traffic

This report presents the results from measurements of interdomain traffic traces. It discusses the implications of interdomain traffic characterization on the feasibility of interdomain traffic engineering. In the first part, we study the relationship between interdomain traffic and the routing view of the Internet. Our contributions are the following. The distribution of the traffic received b...

Simulating Large-scale Networks with Analytical Models

Discrete-event simulation of computer networks has significant scalability issues, which makes simulating large-scale networks problematic. We propose a high-level abstraction modeling network domains, interdomain links and traffic with highly scalable analytical models, which is much more efficient but slightly less accurate than node-by-node models. Thus, simulation scenarios containing sever...

Interdomain traffic engineering with BGP

Traffic engineering is performed by means of a set of techniques that can be used to better control the flow of packets inside an IP network. We discuss the utilization of these techniques across interdomain boundaries in the global Internet. We first analyze the characteristics of interdomain traffic on the basis of measurements from three different Internet service providers and show that a s...
